Alfa Romeo Giulia SWB Zagato: a unique coupe on a short sports sedan chassis
Italian coachbuilder Zagato has unveiled its next masterpiece, a coupe based on the Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio, which took two years to develop and build.
The Alfa Romeo Giulia SWB Zagato project was started in 2021 and was timed to coincide with the centenary of the collaboration between Alfa Romeo and Zagato, as a result of which dozens of unique models saw the light of day. It is curious that among them were Alfas with equipment not from Alfa - for example, the Alfa Romeo TZ3 Stradale coupe with the “offal” from the Dodge Viper, but in the case of the car presented today, everything went in the traditional way, the project was based on the Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio sports sedan with a 2.9-liter V6 biturbo petrol engine and a 6-speed manual gearbox.
The letters SWB indicate a shortened wheelbase, but Zagato does not say how much it has been sawn down. But it is known that all the technical stuffing has been pumped up to the level of the limited Giulia GTAm sedan , in which the engine power has been increased from 510 to 540 hp. and reconfigured chassis. Well, the body of the Zagato coupe, of course, is its own, with unique carbon fiber exterior panels. There are, however, two stock parts in the back - these are headlights borrowed from the Alfa Romeo Tonale crossover . The rear "optics", even though it resembles Aston Martin sports cars, is completely unique.
The interior remains standard, that is, the same as the stock sedan, but it is completely altered and generously decorated with carbon fiber. There are no rear seats, so the trunk of the coupe is quite large, loading of things takes place through a cover combined with a panoramic rear window - because of this feature, some network commentators have already called the Zagato creation a hatchback, but this definition is hardly appropriate for such a sculptural and deliberately sporty cars. Of course, there are signature “bubbles” Zagato - they form the profile of the roof. The heavy-looking food is also Zagato's corporate identity, and not the "impotence of designers", as ill-wishers write.
The dynamic characteristics of the Alfa Romeo Giulia SWB Zagato have not been announced, but it is clear that they are somewhere on the level of the Alfa Romeo Giulia GTAm, which, however, did not have a version with a manual gearbox - only with an “automatic”: with it GTAm is gaining the first “hundred” » in 3.6 seconds and accelerates to a maximum of 300 km/h.
The coupe was built in a single copy, its development and construction was paid for by the owner, a wealthy collector from Germany, who already has several Zagato models in his garage. The cost of the Alfa Romeo Giulia SWB Zagato was not disclosed - we believe it is several million euros.
